The University of Cambridge is still at the top of the tree in 2024 with Edinburgh also a non-mover at two. The University of Liverpool, Nottingham and Glasgow all jumped one place up the table this year. Harper Adams University is a new entry at nine, offering a range of veterinary courses.

Studying Veterinary Medicine 

Whether you want to become a veterinary practitioner, or plan to work with animals in another career, degrees in this subject will improve your knowledge of animal behaviour as well as disease, disorders and injury. You’ll also learn a range of clinical skills along with animal husbandry.  

There are several veterinary medicine degrees to consider including:

• Veterinary Nursing & Companion Animal Behaviour BSc  

Courses usually involve practical placements and are assessed in various ways including clinical observations, exams and coursework.

Careers in Veterinary Medicine  

Many students study for a Veterinary Medicine degree with the intention of becoming a surgeon or nurse in a vet practice but there are other options such as an animal behaviourist, veterinary pathologist or research scientist.  

Working with animals can be emotionally and physically challenging. For example, you may have to work with extremely sick animals who can’t be saved. However, it’s also an incredibly rewarding career, improving the lives of animals and their owners.
