About Yorkshire

Yorkshire is the largest county in the United Kingdom, formally known as the County of York and affectionately known as ‘God’s own Country’. Its cultural history includes Roman and Viking invasions, the War of the Roses and the industrial revolution. On top of its history, it has breath taking natural landscapes ready to be explored.

Being the largest county in the UK, Yorkshire has many famous cities and towns, varying in size and status. Below’s a list of the 10 largest towns and cities (with those containing a university marked in bold):

  • Bradford
  • Doncaster
  • Halifax
  • Huddersfield
  • Hull
  • Leeds
  • Middlesborough
  • Rotherham
  • Sheffield
  • York

The universities in Yorkshire and Humber are spread across just five major locations in the region. The oldest of these is Leeds Arts University which was established in 1846, despite only receiving university status in 2017. Student life is all about exploring, so you’ll want to know the best way to get around your new region.

Air

The Yorkshire and Humber region has three airports: Leeds Bradford International Airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and Humberside Airport, all with daily flights to and from multiple destinations. Many of the UK’s other airports are also easy to access via Yorkshire’s high-speed trains.

Ferry

The Port of Hull in Yorkshire and the Port of Tyne in Newcastle both have ferries across to Holland and Belgium. During summer, there are mini cruises to Northern Europe, around the British Isles and up to the Scottish islands.

Train

Yorkshire and Humber are served by regular services from across the North East, North West, South West England, the Midlands and London, including high speed offerings. You’ll not be short of places to go and a fast route home.

Bus

If trains are a bit too pricey, National Express Coaches run regular services from London to Doncaster, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, and York. All of Yorkshire and Humber’s university towns and cities run local bus services. Check your prospective uni’s travel pages for more information.

Yorkshire is a treasure trove of things to do. You’ll have access to the breathtaking countryside pockets of history and a thriving food scene, leaving you with plenty to do in your downtime from studying.

Art & culture

You can marvel at the wonders of Yorkshire’s Sculpture Park in Wakefield or visit the National Railway Museum to visit the art gallery opened in 2011 that houses more than 12,000 posters, prints and drawings, alongside 1.5 million photographs (many of which have never been publicly displayed). The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley is a regular host to touring contemporary art exhibitions also.

Outdoors

The North York Moors are made up of more than 1,400 miles of forests, hills, moorlands, and coastline, and house local wildlife including deer and badgers. There are also plenty of historic sites and village pubs for a pit stop. You can choose to walk or cycle through this breathtaking scenery. In the Yorkshire Dales, you’ll find the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Food

Yorkshire has the highest number of Michelin Star restaurants in the UK outside of London, so you can be sure that its food scene reflects this. You’ll find a mix of food highlighting local cuisine and produce as well as an impressive array of international cuisine. In major cities and bigger towns, you’ll find pop-up food markets and street food. If baking is your thing, Yorkshire is well known for its bread baking tradition, and you can find baking schools and courses to keep you busy in your uni holidays and at weekends.
