Guide to student accommodation

There’s so much to think about when heading off to university. Choosing where you will live is an important factor in your university experience. We have outlined some key factors to consider when looking for student accommodation and links to further information. 

Living at home or away

There are many factors that may come into play when deciding to live away from home while at university, including cost and family commitments. No one else can make this decision for you. While some enjoy the independence of being away from home for the first time and involving themselves in campus life, others may want to save money and focus more on the academic side of university life.  

If you decide to live away, you’ll need to choose the right accommodation for you. University and private student halls vary from the plush to the basic so your budget will be a key factor in deciding. 

In most UK universities, you’ll need to find your own accommodation in your second year of study and if you can’t find halls that are right for you for your first year, you may have to start house hunting before then.

What will university accommodation cost? 

As with all accommodation, student or otherwise, prices differ depending on your landlord and your location. For example, the average weekly rent for purpose-built student accommodation in the UK is £166 but in the private sector, prices can range from £155—£228 per week depending on room type. In London, prices increase dramatically for both university and private accommodation, with the average accommodation costing £212 and £259 per week respectively.
